Blogging from 65 mph
I am a big fan of trains - the ease of travel, the ability to stretch your legs and grab food/drink/beer from the cafe car - the interesting conversations that you invariably fall into with fellow travelers - the scenery. The list is long, however today I’m traveling via bus.
Not just any bus mind you, but the BoltBus.
See - I had to travel to NYC earlier in the week for a meeting with a new company that I am working with this summer and I traveled by train to get there.
$84 and a 4.5 hr later I was at my meeting in Midtown. Unfortunately, because of some Amtrak rail work, all transportation between Boston and New York via rails was delayed and Acela service was suspended. The return trip to Boston would take 6.5 hours and still cost $84. Given the option of spending most of the working day on a slow moving train and flight delays coming out of NYC airports, I opted for the BoltBus. I bought my ticket at the last minute and paid all of $18 for a one-way fare on a bus with more legroom than your average airline seat, free wifi (I’m typing this in while sitting in the back of the bus) and a smooth ride.
Tickets start at $1 if you book early enough and go up per day. According to my anecdotal conversations with my driver, the company is making money, expanding routes and purchasing more equiptment. All good signs as far as my partial MBA training indicates. I think I’ll be traveling BoltBus a lot more often.
My only gripe: no beer service. ;)
