Congratulations to Sir Salman
When I was in high school in Washington DC at Saint Albans, I had a wonderful English teacher named Paul Piazza who made me relish the wonders of good prose and the voices that crafted them.
Often times Dr. Piazza and I would talk about different books that I had read and it was at this time that fell in love with post-coloninal South Asian authors including Salman Rushdie. I think what was most interesting at the time was that he had a price on his head and was banned in certain parts of the world. That romanticism added to his appeal. Strangely enough, the first book of his I read was ‘Midnight’s Children’, not the ‘Satanic Verses’.
it is nice to see this article today. Rushdie’s books always amazed me - and this article reminded me that I have yet to read ‘The Ground Beneath Her Feet’.
